Egreetings

Did the Three Wise Men Want the Christ Child to be Wealthy and Healthy?

Hark, did the Herald Angels Sing about Essential Oils?

So, you’re probably wondering, “What does Christmas have to do with essential oils?”

Well, you may recall the story of a visit by three wise men to the Christ Child, as told in the Bible, St. Matthew 2:1:

“. . now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem . . . they presented unto him gifts: gold, and frankincense and myrrh.”

RX For holiday gladness and joy.

PS 45: 7-8 …anointed with the oil of gladness so that your garments smell of myrrh, cinnamon and aloes….

Could it be those three wise men really were wise beyond their times? Obviously they wanted the newborn Christ Child to be wealthy (gold) and healthy.

Healthy?

Well, truthfully, numerous essential oils such as frankincense and myrrh were in fact quite a valuable commodity in ancient times – even more valuable than gold. Face it, wealth isn’t much good without one’s health.

Evidence clearly suggests that oils were an integral part of healing in ancient times. I know because Egyptian medicinal scrolls dating back to 1500 BCE were uncovered in the tombs of Egyptian royalty.

Add to that the fact that in 1817, an archaeologist discovered one of the most vital scrolls – the Ebers Papyrus medical scroll – tucked between the legs of a mummy in the city of Thebes, Egypt. This 870-foot long scroll describes more than 800 remedies for diseases, many of which included numerous essential oils that possessed powerful medicinal properties.

The scroll also reveals that Egyptian healers had a remarkably high success rate, treating as many as 81 diseases with oils, such as: frankincense, cinnamon, myrrh, rosemary, galbanum, hyssop, cassia, and spikenard, often mixed with honey.

Of course, the Egyptians didn’t have controlled scientific conditions to test essential oils as we have today. Instead, they just learned by trial and error and simply passed along any healing secrets they discovered.

We are still researching and learning all we can about essential oils today. The only difference is we do strict clinical testing. We write down our results and pass them along to colleagues who can test our theories and conclusions.

It seems that modern society and yes, the medical community, is slow to remember the ancient healing roots humankind once possessed but we are learning something new each day. Will we ever catch up to our essential oils past?

I think so. We just need to be diligent and a bit more open-minded about accepting new possibilities and finding alternative means to heal our bodies and prevent illness, rather than filling a prescription.

There is a natural means to good health and that’s why I’m here to tell you all about it.

I hope you enjoy a wonderful, happy, and healthy Christmas!

February 14, 2010

Scottsdale, AZ – Author Reveals Natural Secrets for Healing Family and Friends

Doctor’s Fresh New Book Offers Tips for a Longer, Healthier Life

Success has changed Dr. James L. Geiger.

That’s good news, however, because the good doctor only measures success in medical terms.

He’s changed because he now knows beyond a doubt that the people under his care live longer, healthier, and happier lives. That’s good news to him because the people he cares so much about are his family, his friends, and his patients.

He’s more passionate now than ever about sharing his secrets to healthier living with everyone.

Dr. Geiger has spent years carefully researching and documenting the dramatic – and sometimes lifesaving – improvements he has helped to make in the lives and health of his own friends, family, and patients naturally, with his unique essential oils and exotic juices.

“I guess I’m a bit passionate about anything that helps people enjoy healthier lives. I often tell people that my book is simply ‘good medicine’ for whatever ails you. I cannot stress loudly and clearly enough the benefits of therapeutic remedies using juices and essential oils – they’re safer, less expensive than prescriptions, and scientifically proven to work.”

Already a published author, surgical anesthesiologist, and aromatherapist, the good doctor remains committed to searching out new methods of complementary medicine integration and telling the world about his discoveries.

Dr. Geiger’s updated paperback version – The Sweet Smell of Success (Your Doctor’s Natural Guide to a Longer, Healthier Life – focuses more closely on the nutritional aspects of oils and juices.

He calls it “the layperson’s dictionary for good nutrition and preventative medicine.”

For anyone who’s thinking about buying roses for their special someone on Valentine’s Day, the doctor highly recommends it, but not for the reasons you might expect.

Some oils calm and relax the nervous system. Rose and patchouli oils, for example, cause a 30 percent decrease in sympathetic activity.

“Rose oil has anti-conflict and anti-anxiety properties,” says Dr. Geiger. “Just the sweet smell of the scent of roses or essential oil of rose for example, decreases the release of the stress hormone adrenal cortisol , which is a sympathetic response to stress.”

In other words, you become greatly relaxed because your body is not excited in a sympathetic manner, by reactions to worry and fears which could cause insomnia.

Other things you’ll learn in the book include this and more:

* Why Food is Your Best Medicine

* Health Tips Every Woman Should Know

* Revolutionary New Wellness Advances

Exercise Makes You Smarter and Healthier.

I don’t have to be a mind reader to know that many of you are already thinking about making a New Year’s Resolution.

For most of us, a worthwhile resolution usually involves our health.

My own personal resolution is to give you some of the best reasons in the world to exercise and follow a healthier lifestyle.

Exercise is essential to our health, particularly for women.

Studies show that exercise at different “doses” of physical activity yields different responses in cardio-respiratory fitness among sedentary, overweight, and postmenopausal women with elevated blood pressure.

Women who exercise to varying degrees experience the positive changes of increased muscle mass and decreased fat, proportionally determined by how much they work out.

Exercise not only builds muscle and burns fat; it also resets the body’s resting metabolic rate to a higher set point, so you burn more calories when resting.

Walking is an ideal exercise, because it is low impact and still somewhat strenuous. Walking 10,000 pedometer-measured steps daily has been shown to create positive metabolic balance (i.e., weight loss). Normally, we walk about 6,000 steps a day and need 30 minutes more of treadmill time to gain the remaining 4,000 steps.

If you walk less than 5,000 steps a day then your lifestyle is considered sedentary: couch potato status.

Women and men need daily walking and workouts with weights several times per week.

Yes guys, both women and men may begin developing osteoporosis in their thirties, so get moving!

As the oilMD I’d also recommend several essential oils that may contribute to bone health, such as: sage, juniper, pine, dwarf pine, and eucalyptus, and even oils derived from common kitchen spices. Rosemary, thyme, and sage are also effective due to their high monoterpene content. Choose Bone Balancer by the oilMD.

These oils work by inhibition of osteoclasts that remodel and tear down bone cells (Muhbauer, 2003).

Here’s another powerful reason to exercise more: your brain.

Exercise Your Brain Power

Scientists have made preliminary observations that new nerve cells can be grown in the human brain simply by putting subjects on a three-month aerobic workout regimen.

New brain cells are actually created as we exercise.

The wonderful Miracle Gro-like substance called brain-derived neutrotrophic factor (BDNF) induces growth of new neurons. Exercise affects cognitive ability just as it affects muscles, making the brain better and smarter. These new BDNF-stimulated brain cells have increased capillary circulation and higher levels of the neurotransmitters dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine.

Researchers also believe that exercise benefits your memory. Paradoxically, exercise is remotely chemically akin to the combined antidepressant effects of taking Prozac and the mental stimulation of taking Ritalin. Call it natural medicine for your body, if you will. Physical activity could also become instrumental in preventing Alzheimer’s disease, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and other cognitive disorders.

No matter what your age, an active body is essential for an active mind and strong immune function.

Also keep in mind that the better quality foods you eat and the more you exercise throughout your life will not just build up your muscles, but it may prevent heart and brain failure.

Will you keep that New Year’s Resolution to eat well and exercise?

I guess it all depends on how much smarter, happier, and healthier you wish to be to enjoy many more New Years to come.

The oilMD Holiday Sale features oil and book deal! You can choose any oilMD blend, especially Bone Balancer and The Sweet Smell of Success hardcover book for $24.95. Save $25.

Look for the soft cover version of The Sweet Smell of Success, Your Doctor’s Natural Guide to a Longer Healthier Life, coming out early in the New Year.

I should also tell you that I will be appearing on the Lifetime Network national cable television show, The Balancing Act in January 17th, 2011@0700 EST/PST.

The Balancing Act is America’s only one-hour morning show about women and for women and in the past they have interviewed such notables as Evander Holyfield, Carl Brown, singer Danny Gokey, and reality show host, Jeff Probst. I will be interviewed by host Danielle Knox.

Among other almost-miraculous medical secrets, I’ll be revealing to the world why I’m so fascinated by the field of aromatherapy and essential oils and you’ll get a rare glimpse of what it’s really like to be a doctor in the operating room.

I hope you’ll tune in.

Have a Healthy and Happy New Year!

Dr. James L. (Tad) Geiger has been an anesthesiologist since 1986 and an aromatherapist since 2004. He went to college in San Francisco where worked in a San Francisco hospital doing cardiac anesthesia for his father who is a retired cardiothoracic surgeon.
“The best person to monitor your health is you,” says Michael F. Roizen,
MD, the newly designated chief wellness officer of the Cleveland Clinic and
author of Real Age: Are You as Young as You Can Be?

Anesthesiologist Monitors with Vigilance and uses Vigilance WordPress theme

Monitor with Vigilance
The motto of anesthesia practice is vigilance. Anesthesiologists
and critical care doctors use the “rule of trends” in acute care medicine settings
to assess and measure response to treatment. Illness can be measured suddenly
in seconds or over decades, as in persistently poor diet leading to malnutrition
and obesity. The trend is not your friend when it comes to obesity in the
United States. In the last thirty years, in every state, the percentage of the
population defined as overweight to morbidly obese has increased. That time
span correlates directly with the massive rise and commercialization of the
fast food industry.
Every few minutes during an operation, the vital signs of heart rate and
rhythm, blood pressure, respiration, temperature, oxygenation, ventilations
parameters, and more are noted and charted. When making adjustments to
anesthetic doses, we retake the vitals to obtain a measure of the effect of the
drugs given. There are sometimes up to a dozen or more drugs given over
the course of an entire surgery. We are still awaiting the arrival of the “ideal”
monitor for depth of anesthesia. Monitoring of vital signs is crucial.

“The best person to monitor your health is you,” says Michael F. Roizen,
MD, the newly designated chief wellness officer of the Cleveland Clinic and
author of Real Age: Are You as Young as You Can Be? He advises finding a
doctor who is trustworthy and likable. The material presented in his book is
insightful and worth mastering. Actually working toward developing increased
personal wellness and well-being is extremely beneficial. When adjusting your
own physiology in terms of weight loss, it is important to monitor yourself
closely, perhaps even working closely with your doctor, especially if you are
taking prescription medications.

Hopefully, you will need to use less medication as you eat and exercise
properly and lose weight. Drinking berry fruit juices and using essential oils
as part of your diet plan will alter and perhaps reset your bodily systems. You
may need to have your vital signs and laboratory values monitored frequently
by your health care provider. Insulin-dependent diabetics should monitor
their blood sugar level at regular intervals throughout the day. Take proper
care of yourself and get the appropriate support you may need.

The awareness during general anesthesia portrayed in the Hollywood
thriller Awake reveals a frightening medical issue.

Awareness and Anesthesia
To arrive at the ideal anesthetic, we need to understand more
about how anesthesia works and how people consent to have anesthesia.
Some types of surgical procedures can and should be accomplished using a
technique called conscious sedation, with monitored anesthesia care. Some
awareness is intended and expected during conscious sedation, so patients
need to be educated and consent to undergo that type of surgery and
anesthesia if indicated. In my experience, many people do not understand
the difference between conscious sedation and general anesthesia when it is
explained before surgery, nor do they remember the discussion after surgery.
Awareness while under the influence of general anesthesia is very rare. It is a
potential complication of general anesthesia.
The awareness during general anesthesia portrayed in the Hollywood
thriller Awake reveals a frightening medical issue. In reality, this unintended
situation could be due to numerous types of problems resulting from
mechanical failure or human error. It is challenging to accurately analyze
questionnaire and interview data in order to differentiate unconscious
memory formation, dreaming, and drug-induced hallucinations from actual
inappropriate awareness under general anesthesia. Studies determining the
statistical incidence of these events vary significantly. The posttraumatic stress
syndrome (PTSS ) that may develop as a result of a medical sentinel event
such as awareness under general anesthesia requires specialized intervention.
Anyone experiencing an awareness event can obtain help from special interest
groups that can provide support, such as the Anesthesia Awareness Campaign
founded by Carol Weihrer, and obtain appropriate referral to qualified mental
health care professionals.
Theories of anesthesia have been changing over the years to adapt to new
molecular knowledge and understanding, but there is still a gap, especially
relating to anesthetizing the conscious mind and the unconscious mind.
The conscious and unconscious minds have properties yet to be revealed.
Various kinds of learning and memory occur while under general anesthesia.
Until there are pure anesthetic agents whose effective depths can be measured
faithfully with monitors better than bispectral analysis, in order to guarantee
that each and every anesthetized patient does not experience unintended
awareness during surgery, there is no ideal agent or monitor or mechanical
fail-safe. Increasing patients’ overall educational awareness about the events
surrounding surgery pertaining to anesthesia improves patient satisfaction
and surgical outcomes. Providing the satisfactory service of patient safety and
comfort is the goal of every anesthesiologist.

The Ideal Brain

New brain cells are created as we exercise. The wonderful Miracle
Gro-like substance called brain-derived neutrotrophic factor (BDNF) induces
growth of new neurons. Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Science of
Exercise and the Brain, by John Ratey, MD, has generated significant interest
in new research supporting exercise as medicine for the brain.

Exercise affects cognitive ability just as it affects muscles, making the brain better and
smarter. These new BDNF-stimulated brain cells have increased capillary
circulation and higher levels of the neurotransmitters dopamine, serotonin,
and norepinephrine. These findings about exercise have led researchers to
propose that exercise benefits memory. Paradoxically, exercise is remotely
chemically akin to the combined antidepressant effects of taking Prozac and
and the mental stimulation of taking Ritalin.

Physical activity could become instrumental in preventing Alzheimer’s disease, attention-deficit hyperactivity
disorder (ADHD), and other cognitive disorders. No matter what your age,
an active body is essential for an active mind and strong immune function
(Jensen, 1999). Exercise is medicine for the mind and body.
